Eton Hannover exhibits the latest medium-sized dual-clutch gearbox

At the Hannover Motor Show in Germany, Eaton , the world’s leading power management company, exhibited the newly launched ProcisionTM, a new medium-capacity dual-clutch transmission with 8% more fuel efficiency than vehicles with the same torque converter. 10%.

The product is scheduled to begin sales in the North American market in mid-2015 and will be introduced to the global market in the future. The new 7-speed transmission features a dual clutch design and electronic shifting to provide optimum fuel efficiency and smooth continuous torque output depending on grade, vehicle weight, and throttle input in various shift situations.

John Beering, senior vice president and general manager of Eaton Commercial Vehicle Transmission, said: “Small businesses rely on their 6th and 7th tier trucks to deliver and perform arduous tasks every day. The new Eaton Procision is the first in the North American market to be used. Dual-clutch gearboxes for Class 6-7 vehicles. This gearbox has many intelligent features that make driving more fuel efficient and more comfortable, making it ideal for medium-sized applications."

Eaton uses dual-clutch technology to make the start-up acceleration process more efficient, while also optimising the shift points so that it can reach the highest point efficiently. With the preselection of the next gear, the engine torque is switched between the two clutches, thereby completing the shift. “High-efficiency dual-clutch technology with closed-loop control systems can significantly reduce the slip and transfer losses associated with torque converters,” commented Jeff Carpenter, engineering manager for the medium-sized Procision project.

The dual clutch module is completely placed in the gearbox, hydraulically controlled and oil-cooled, so it has a long service life. Five spring shock absorbers are used to control torsional vibration and use a complete seal to eliminate contamination.

“Our customers are just trying to achieve what they want on a mid-range transmission, and Eaton Procision has made this wish a reality, very smart,” said Joe Semaan, director of commercial vehicles at Eaton Vehicle Group. “The product is easy to customize, which is critical for the fleet owner who wants to put the truck into operation to meet its business needs as much as possible.” Intelligent functions such as Eaton’s dynamic gear shift enable the gearbox to be based on grade and driver demand. Automatic switching between economy and power shift modes. The basic shift results are dynamically corrected based on the current torque, engine acceleration, and grade.

Economical and high-performance shift tables can be adjusted to achieve overall calibration optimization to meet any customer's specific needs. The Eaton gearbox has the highest calibration flexibility ever. Both the owner and the driver will feel the benefits of this optional and adjustable creep mode, which avoids the combined thrust in the torque converter's low-speed mode. This provides first-rate, low-speed handling. The optional and adjustable ramp assist launch feature prevents the vehicle from rolling down or sliding forward for up to 3 seconds on a gradient up to 8% of the ramp to control the start-up process. Vehicles using Procision can use the Eaton ServiceRanger software to turn these features on and off. Competing products cannot provide such flexibility.

It is wise to choose a Procision product with three standard PTO openings. After purchasing the product, dealers can use the ServiceRanger software to enable power take off (PTO) functionality. This flexibility is one of the competitive advantages of Procision, which is a great benefit to both new product users and the used product market.

The Eaton Procision transmission is optimised for fuel economy that is 8% to 10% higher than the torque converter automatic transmission. Procision is fully integrated with the Cummins vehicle acceleration management system and can be used in conjunction with Eaton’s dynamic shifting capabilities to reduce the impact of radical style drivers on fuel economy. The optimized creep mode balances economy and power. If necessary, fuel economy can be improved by disabling these functions. In addition, the drive load on the engine is actively reduced when the vehicle is parked, which also improves fuel economy.

Eaton’s Procision transmission features a new synthetic transmission oil that allows oil and filter replacement intervals of up to 150,000 miles, while protecting parts while reducing maintenance costs. And the internal oil sump filter and electrical system require no maintenance.

"Based on its fuel economy and low maintenance costs, the Procision transmission promises to provide the lowest total cost of ownership for all medium-duty transmission applications in the commercial vehicle market today," Beering added. “This is a state-of-the-art gearbox that provides optimal performance in a variety of driving environments to help drivers drive safely, safely and easily.”

“Customers told us that they needed the ability to make the truck easier to drive,” Carpenter said. “As a result, we have designed a series of functions that will allow drivers who are in the mountains or on difficult terrain, or on city routes, who need to face sharp turns and crowded traffic to be more at ease and maximize efficiency.”

With the jog shifter actuated by the brake pedal, the driver can downshift in a hill or other environment without having to leave the steering wheel with his hands or with both eyes off the road, which allows the driver to better control the vehicle.

With the creep mode, it is possible to control the low-speed movement of the vehicle without using a throttle when driving in the parking lot and the discharge area. Forward and reverse creep speeds can be adjusted independently, allowing you to customize lower speeds.

In the low-speed mode, the automatic ramp braking device shifts the gearbox down, which helps the driver to reduce the truck's speed on long, steep slopes and extend the service life of the brake linings.

"Since midsize vehicle customers depend on their trucks day and night, reliability is critical," Carpenter said. "We have conducted many reliability tests and considered various terrains, operating methods and operating conditions. We have subjected this transmission to a variety of tests that ordinary users will never experience."

Procision's design life (B-10) is 10 years or 400,000 miles. The Eaton Procision transmission offers a three-year/unlimited mileage warranty covering the entire system including dual clutch modules for commercial vehicle applications. School bus applications can enjoy a five-year/unlimited mileage warranty.

During the warranty period, the Procision transmission can only be repaired by an OEM dealer or an Eaton-authorized fleet. Both the dealer and the fleet can benefit from the simplicity of the product and can also guarantee its in-store service revenue.
