German brand tire development intelligent tires that automatically monitor tire pressure

Continental's tires produced by Continental Group will have a new feature: report tire pressure to the driver via smartphone. In addition, when inflating the tires, the system can also provide accurate air pressure information, thereby enhancing driving safety and improving fuel efficiency.

October 15, 2010 - The Continental Group is developing a new application technology - reporting tire pressure to drivers through smart phones, creating a safer and more economical future driving environment. The vehicle electronics system is wirelessly connected to the driver's smart phone for fast data exchange. The "inflation aid" of the Automotive Electronics Division of the Continental Group has set an accurate pressure value for each tire. Therefore, when the tire is inflated, even if the inflation pump of the inflation station cannot accurately measure the tire pressure, the best tire pressure value can be obtained. In addition, brief horn sound and flash signal will also indicate that the tire pressure has reached the correct level. The technical requirements required for this system are: a tire pressure monitoring system (equipped with a sensing device on the tire) and a depot-integrated vehicle electronics system with a wireless control interface. The first batch of inflatable aids is expected to be assembled on vehicles in 2013.

Dr. Burkhard Wies, responsible for the research and development of passenger car tires, said: "This fast and simple system not only provides convenience for the driver, but also enhances vehicle safety and fuel efficiency. In addition, if the tire is punctured or gasified, Damage to the valve, the driver can also get a leak warning. At the same time, the system is also environmentally friendly - because the right tire pressure can better deal with road resistance, thereby reducing fuel consumption."

Mr Andreas Wolf, head of the Human Body and Safety Business Unit of the Automotive Electronics Division of the Continental Group, said: “The introduction of the inflatable assistance system has brought the body system closer to the outside world. This is also the result of the sincere cooperation between the Continental Group’s electronic systems and tire development. Will provide more useful features for future cars."

From 2013, the Continental Group's German brand tires will begin large-scale production of tires with sensors that can collect tire data. These sensors will be installed directly under the tread, not at the valve - a new era in which humans will soon be entering smart tires.
