Beijing to investigate illegally adding borax food

The State Administration for Industry and Commerce reported on February 8 that the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce recently launched a surprise spot check on the illegal addition of borax to food. It involved 2,288 samples of noodles, noodles, dumplings, cat ears, and scorpions. The qualification rate reached 98.65%. Investigated "borax noodles" and "borax dumplings" more than 30 times.
Borax is a chemical raw material, which is mostly used in the manufacture of ceramics, glass and other products. China has banned borax as a food additive. However, some unscrupulous traders added borax to the noodles to make the noodles more crunchy; adding borax when making glutinous rice dumplings kept the glutinous rice cakes from sticking and increased flexibility. Acidic borax will stimulate gastric acid secretion after entering the stomach, and it will seriously irritate the human stomach, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms.
According to incomplete statistics from related departments, there are currently at least 2,000 stalls for noodle processing at large and small sites such as Beijing shopping malls, supermarkets, food stores, and street stalls. The person in charge of the Beijing Municipal Administration for Industry and Commerce said that since July last year, law enforcement agencies have carried out special blows against “borax noodles” and “borax dumplings” and investigated and dealt with more than 30 cases, all of which were added to the workshops in the urban-rural area. The industrial and commercial department stated that it will continue to increase market monitoring and inspection scope.
