The scale of automotive electronics industry has gradually shifted to emerging countries

Automotive electronics industry continues to expand

Due to the increasing demand for automotive electronics, the automotive electronics market has become one of the hot spots in recent years. According to research data from the research firm StrategyAnalytics, the market size reached 141 billion US dollars in 2007, although the annual growth rate is not high ( About 2-3%, but it has exceeded the market value of desktop computers (DT). The current rapid development of the automotive electronics industry is mainly reflected in the following three markets: car audio, portable navigation devices (PND), and automotive displays.

Car audio development towards integration

It is expected that the compound annual growth rate of global semiconductor sales for integrated car audio ontology will reach 6.5% in 2005-2013. A reverse big explosion is taking place in the field of integrated car audio, and the trend is to build a strong, centralized product. This means that silicon vendors are acting as system integrators at the silicon level in this market. This reverse big explosion is bound to cause winners and losers at the system and semiconductor level. The vendor that provides the basic infotainment system does not necessarily depend on the car architecture, reducing the sales of the application. Manufacturers in the Flash and USB media market may benefit from the need for automotive OEMs to support in-car MP3 playback and to supplement traditional CD autochangers. Therefore, OEMs hope that the silicon chip has a combination of functions and a mixed-signal radio frequency (RF) solution for telephone, radio, MP3, navigation, and other functions.

The public gathered together PND

The PND, already successful in the handheld and automotive market, will have a compound annual growth rate of 38% in global semiconductor sales in this sector in 2005-2013. PNDs with integrated navigation processors will clearly continue to be one of the most important drivers of growth for semiconductor suppliers.

In key growth markets such as the United States and Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA), PND sales are still at a low level. The PND market is expected to exceed 600 million U.S. dollars in 2007, compared with 380 million U.S. dollars in 2006. The most interesting part of PND growth is the boost effect of embedded navigation equipment. Sales of wafers from automotive OEMs and after-sales suppliers using PND are expected to increase nearly threefold in 2013, from a surge of 484 million U.S. dollars in 2006 to 185 million U.S. dollars.

China launches 999 alliance station PND market to raise price war

The mainland's global satellite positioning system (GPS) industry is eager to launch the 999 alliance and hopes to introduce a portable navigation device (PND) under RMB 999. Some Taiwanese companies plan to introduce the Taiwan market, which is expected to set off the price war in Taiwan's PND market ahead of schedule. Although the first-line players have indicated that they will not fear the war, but as the entry-level models have recently been reduced to less than NT$6,000, if the mainland’s low-priced products push forward in the future, the price competition for Taiwan’s PND market will be further triggered. The factory is bound to face the enemy.

In fact, when TomTom formally entered the Taiwan market, Garmin also used a brand new team approach and aimed at the leading manufacturer Mio. Navigational 3 males were officially launched in Taiwan (as shown in Table 1). Recent entry models have already been killed. With NT$6,000 or less, mainlanders may now come to Taiwan at a lower price. The first-tier manufacturers have demonstrated the determination of a fearless price war. However, they still emphasize that they will stick to the quality of their products and highlight the differences in application of innovative software.

OCB upstart car monitor

It is expected that the compound annual growth rate of global semiconductor sales for automotive displays will reach 10% in 2005-2013, which will be a big cake in the automotive market. Among them, OCB LCDs are resistant to low temperatures and fast response, and business opportunities cannot be ignored.

Although OCB (Optically Compensated Bend) technology is slower than VA, IPS and other technologies, and due to the special liquid crystal materials and related optical compensation films are also only supplied by a few manufacturers, TFTLCD manufacturers that have joined the development are not much, but because OCB LCD is more general The liquid crystal display has the characteristics of fast response. Therefore, Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology (TMD) has continued to develop this product since mass production of the OCB LCD panel in 2004, and has collocated with related technologies such as semi-reverse technology, black insertion technology, LEDScanningBLU, etc. OCB LCD monitors still have their advantages in niche markets such as automotive displays, outdoor displays, and high-end professional models.

Since the OCB liquid crystal needs a small rotation angle, it has a rapid response characteristic, and OCB liquid crystal can still operate normally under a low temperature environment, and this feature can exert a good advantage in a vehicle display. LCD panels for automobiles are now being used in navigation displays. The future applications of automotive displays will be extended to rear-seat displays, dashboards, and other applications. However, regardless of the type of vehicle display, it is necessary to consider various temperatures. In the range, make sure that the LCD is still operating normally. Currently, automotive displays use twisted nematic liquid crystal display (TNLCD) panels, and the reaction speed of the liquid crystals in the low-temperature environment becomes slow.

An obvious application example is that in high latitudes, winter temperatures often fall below zero. When the car engine is started, if the average car LCD display operation speed is still very slow at low temperatures, even if overdrive is used to drive the general LCD, The reaction rate will not be much improved at low temperatures. In 2007, TMD demonstrated the operation of OCB LCD panels at minus 40 degrees Celsius.

Although the development of LCD display technology has become more and more mature, it has become the current mainstream display. However, there are still bottlenecks in special or professional applications. OCB LCD display development is to complement the functions that are not achieved by general LCD display. The OCB LCD display is not Applied in the mainstream market, however, in the niche market, there is still a general LCD monitor can not take the place.

Automobile manufacturing industry gradually shifts to emerging countries

The global auto manufacturing industry is accelerating the trend of shifting from Europe, America and Japan to emerging countries and providing opportunities for the development of the entire vehicle industry in Taiwan. Emerging countries are currently constrained by technology, capital, etc. Although they have to use the market and low-cost vehicle manufacturing in exchange for international automobile and vehicle and electric product manufacturing technologies and experience, they are actively supporting their own automotive and vehicle and electric power industries at the same time, and have not given up their independence. Automotive industry.

Although Taiwan has not yet set up an independent vehicle export business, it has already had some foundations. For example, Huachuang Automotive has already developed its first vehicle design solution. If we can make the best use of the international alliance strategy, Taiwan’s independent vehicle output will be exported. There are still opportunities for development in the industry, which will in turn exert a bunch of grape effects that will drive the development of the automotive industry in Taiwan.

However, the resources and experience of emerging countries will only become more and more abundant. In a few years, the vehicle base that Taiwan will finally develop will be even more subtle and it may lose the opportunity for the development of the vehicle output industry.
