The agency's prototype is currently designed by Sumitomo Electric, primarily for standardized demand response agreements that allow all electric vehicles in a region to influence supply and demand. Previously, two German companies, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, announced a joint effort to develop a wireless charging system consisting of two parts, a main coil installed in the garage or parking lot, and a secondary coil mounted under the vehicle's ground.
When the two coils are self-inductive, the two coils are automatically docked when they are close together. The output of the main coil reaches 3.6 kW, and most electric vehicles can be charged in three hours. In the previous BMW test, the BMW i8 was fully charged in less than two hours and could be filled with more than 90% of the power. The company is currently further reworking the coil to achieve 7kW output, which can be used in the BMW i3 in the future.
