UN Helps Developing Countries Solve Energy Problems
European Commission President Barroso announced at the EU Sustainable Energy for All Summit on April 16 that he will strengthen cooperation with the United Nations in the field of universally accessible sustainable energy plans and launch an electricity development plan to help developing countries solve energy problems.
The electricity development plan will invest 50 million euros, and will popularize modern energy services, increase energy efficiency, and promote renewable energy sources in developing countries through technology transfer, training, and financial services. It is expected to benefit about 500 million people by 2030.
Ban Ki-moon welcomed this, he stressed that addressing energy issues is an effective tool to solve global challenges such as environmental change, food safety, and water issues. The goal of achieving a sustainable energy plan for all is of great significance for promoting economic growth, eliminating energy poverty, expanding social equity and protecting the environment.
The year 2012 is the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. The goal of the Sustainable Energy for All Program is to ensure that by 2030, universal access to modern energy services will be achieved, energy efficiency will be doubled, and the share of renewable energy in global energy consumption will be doubled.
